Outdoor Fitness À la Adirondacks

An advertisement for a new line of  "Outdoor Fitness" clothing caught my eye as I perused the plethora of post-holiday sale emails clogging my inbox earlier this week. Since at the time I was shopping in the interest of updating my outdoor recreation writer uniform, I naturally thought I needed some of this special new-fangled clothing for my outdoor fitness wardrobe. It turns out, the line consists of the same things long used by those of us who have been taking our daily fitness training with Mother Nature, the best personal fitness trainer of all. I liked the marketing presentation however, because it included a short article encouraging customers to exercise and train outside as much as possible, no matter where they live. It sounds like someone is a proponent of the Adirondack Lifestyle Wellness Theory!

The products were a disappointment but the advertisement reminded me, although currently quite the rage, this outdoor fitness trend is not a new thing. Outdoor fitness has been an integral part of the Lake Placid and Adirondack lifestyle for a very long time. To that point, Lake Placid is a great choice for those who enjoy active vacations in a naturally stunning resort setting. From the seemingly endless kilometers of exquisitely groomed cross-country ski trails, to pristine ponds and lakes for ice-skating, to sliding downhill at Whiteface, the Olympic Mountain, there are plenty of exhilarating ways to get your heart rate up while enjoying the natural beauty of the Adirondacks. The competitive nature of the region creates a pleasant high-energy buzz for outdoor fitness enthusiasts; the Village of Lake Placid and the Adirondacks hosted two Olympic Winter Games and is a training site for current Olympic athletes,

The wild nature of the Adirondacks can also provide a pleasant surprise. For example, I caught the cute bobcats pictured below walking across the ski trail today as I was cooling down from interval training at the Olympic cross-country ski trails at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Almost every day is a perfect Adirondack day for an outdoor fitness fan.
