Happy First Day of Spring!!

The vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere began at precisely 7:44 ES this morning. Since the Adirondacks are located in the Northern Hemisphere, and I didn’t have a druid horn like the gentleman pictured, I decided to welcome Spring in the Adirondacks by enjoying my morning tea on the front deck. The 11 degree temperature, however, precluded that celebration from lasting more than a few minutes. Instead, I went inside and toasted the sun with a shot of maple syrup while I prepared the morning oatmeal. We also paid homage to the sun in yoga class last night with a killer sun salutation vinyasa, which took a fair amount more effort than the maple syrup shot. This time of year is important to sun worshipers like me who consider sunshine, very simply, a drug. This time of year in the Adirondacks also brings those cold nights; 11 degrees this morning, and warm, sunny days. This combination translates into maple sap running and ……incredible Spring skiing! OK, I guess it frequently comes back to the topic of skiing on this blog. This is worth talking about though: for a variety of scientific reasons, cold nights and warm sunny days yields corn snow. If your ski outing is timed properly, skiing corn snow can be one of the most cosmic, but legal, experiences around. I highly recommend it. Happy Spring, now get out there and soak up the sun!
