Lake Placid Polar Express

If you are even slightly aware of what is going on in the world, you'll already know brutally cold air is on the way to the northeastern part of the United States.
It is indeed predicted to be pretty cold here in Lake Placid, but nothing is coming that we haven't seen before; like this past Saturday. Despite the -10 temperatures however, I had an awesome cross-country ski on Saturday morning at my favorite place to x-c ski fast, the Olympic Trails at Mount Van Hoevenberg (MVH) in Lake Placid, New York. Since it was -10, I could use polar kick wax, which provides plenty of kick, but on groomed snow, the down hills can still be really fast. And they were. It is so much fun to put your skis in perfectly set tracks, like little train tracks, that take the fastest line down a nice, steep and long down hill, on skinny skis. Because we have some of the best x-c ski trail groomers in the world (seriously), we are treated to tuck and go conditions on most days. On a cold day like Saturday, it is particularly handy since a tucked position makes it easier to use your hands to cover your face on the windy down hills.
