Happy 10-10-10 from Lake Placid!

This auspicious Adirondack day dawned clear and 25 degrees cold. The sun is shining brilliantly in the beautiful Adirondack blue sky, a hopeful harbinger of a delightfully fortunate day.

The day is special because, as everyone knows, the string of numerals 101010 is actually 42 in the binary numeral system. And as we all know, 42 is the Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything. I feel especially blessed today because I live on planet earth, the planet whose very existence is based on curiosity. As explained in this Wiki paraphrase of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy:
“… a group of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings demand to learn the Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything from the supercomputer, Deep Thought, specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer, which turns out to be 42. Unfortunately, The Ultimate Question itself is unknown.

When asked to produce The Ultimate Question, the computer says that it cannot; however, it can help to design an even more powerful computer (the Earth), that can. The programmers then embark on a further ten-million-year program to discover The Ultimate Question. This new computer will incorporate living beings in the "computational matrix", with the pan-dimensional creators assuming the form of mice. “
On a more serious note, it really is a special day around the world, and for me. Today, through the organizational efforts of 350.0rg, “people at 7347 events in 188 countries are getting to work on the climate crisis.”

Today is a day of global work parties, and here in the Adirondacks, we are doing our part. We are having a Reed work party, building a low-carbon footprint home with the help of family and friends.

Surrounded by the blessings of the warm Adirondack sun, Douglas Adams, Bill McKibben, my family and friends, this is indeed an auspicious day.
