Adirondack Athletic Culture

There is no way around the obvious fact that Lake Placid has more than its fair share of competitive athletes hanging around. It is no exaggeration to say Lake Placid had been a hot spot of winter sports competition since the early 1900s. Many people are not aware of the fact that in the winter of 1932, Lake Placid hosted the first Olympic Games ever held in North America. Technically, Lake Placid and the surrounding communities have been seriously involved in winter sports competition for more than 77 years. This proclivity to enjoy, and in some cases crave, playing outside in the snow and cold is essential to and entwined with the Adirondack experience. If you like the idea of living in the Adirondacks, you most likely appreciate the healing and positive attributes of the natural world. It is my theory, that when you add the competitive element to playing in the outdoors, you get a huge part of the Adirondack lifestyle; healthy, mellow, friendly people who are too exhausted to be anything other than nice, but will happily kick your butt in a ski race.
