Stunning Adirondack Present and Alluring Adirondack Future

Today's post was supposed to be all about the new trails at Whiteface Mountain.
"Whiteface will enter a new frontier in 2008-09. Known as Lookout Mountain, Whiteface will open an expert run and triple chair to the east of the Slides. In addition, snowmaking will be brought to this new area. When completed beyond 2008-09, Lookout Mountain will have three expert runs, one long intermediate trail, snowmaking, triple chair, and more glades. It will drop 2,200 vertical feet, more than some resorts in the east. The intermediate trail will enable skiers and riders to connect to Kids Kampus and the main lodge. Guests will be able to access the chair lift from the beginning of the flats on Easy Street."

I was going to say all that. However, on my way in to the office this morning, I simply had to take today's photo of Mirror Lake from Main Street in Lake Placid. It is a beautiful Fall day in the Adirondacks; there is not a cloud in the Adirondack blue sky. As you can see, the foliage colors are indeed past peak, but the scenery is nevertheless still stunning. I wasn't the only one with the camera out this morning. The Village of Lake Placid is busy with visitors checking out the scenery, good food and shopping. Based on last night's chilly temperatures, the alluring Adirondack future is not that far away! I am talking about the new ski trails currently under construction at Whiteface. Here is a cool slide show of the trails and the amazing construction process. Since the Whiteface Mountain Toll Road is one of my favorite early season skis, I've spent many October days looking down on the area where the new trails are being built, wondering how it would be to ski those lines. I've always been too chicken to climb over the wall to check it out. Now I don't have to! And a chairlift with access to glades is included in the deal. Wow. As they say up there in Alaska, "It don't get no better 'den dat." And you know what they say about snow this time of year in the Adirondacks, "Bring It On."
