Perfect Ironman Training Compound!

The 10th Ironman Lake Placid will be held this Sunday, July 20, 2008. For those of you who have never experienced it, the Ironman Lake Placid Triathlon is an incredible event. Competitors start bright and early at 6:45 a.m. from Lake Placid public beach and swim 2.4 miles in pristine Mirror Lake. They then rush to the Olympic speed skating oval where their bicycles are parked, change clothing, jump on their bikes and ride 112 miles up and down through the lovely Adirondack Mountains. The bike course takes them back to the oval where they embark on the final stage which is a marathon run of 26.2 miles. I get tired just writing about it. It really is a cool event.
I try not to do this too often here on the blog, but I can't resist: I was out on my measly bike ride the other day and passed one of our office's new listings right on the Ironman marathon course on Riverside Drive. As a triathlete in a organized training camp buzzed past me, I thought how cool it would be for a triathlon club to base their training camps from this property; it is right on the course. (I know, not very profound ruminations on my bike rides...)It is a 16-acre, hard to find, true Adirondack Camp called the Descente Lodge. The main house with five bedrooms and three bathrooms has plenty of room for athletes to hang out, eat and recover from all that exercise. The whole compound would be a great place to host a training camp. I suppose it could also be a Bed & Breakfast or serve as a vacation rental as well. It is tucked away in the woods on Riverside Drive, obviously a popular running and biking road. And it is really private. The Ausable River is just across the road and the property includes 1,100 feet on this great trout-fishing water, which is a great way to relax after doing Ironman.
If you are coming to town for the Ironman Lake Placid Triathlon, or a vacation, and would like to have a look, drop me a line at and we can take a tour. If you are competing this weekend, good luck and have fun!
