Adirondack Wellness Theory

The idea of health and wellness and what it means has been knocking around in my head for a couple of weeks now. The noise is starting to bother me so I figure I'd better write about it. I'm thinking about the topic because ski season has ended and I still mourn the feeling that comes from slipping out for a quick ski to start the day. The transition to warm weather activities is a slow one in the Adirondacks. As my regular readers know, I believe spending time outside in a natural environment is healing. The positive moods from negative ions science proves my point.
Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.

The topic of wellness is also on my mind because I, like many Adirondackers, usually go on sun-seeking trips in the Spring. This year I traveled a little bit south for surf and outdoor sun. Driving through east coast chaos so I could spend time outdoors in the sun reminded me how important it is to find out and do what nourishes you. Nourish: supply with what is necessary for life, health, and growth. I think this sort of outdoor fun; therapeutic nourishment, should be included on the FDA's food pyramid.
