Give Me All Your Money, Eh.

For the first time that I can recall, reviewing the 22 years I’ve lived here, an armed robber held up a bank in the Adirondacks yesterday. One might think this is not a great story to share on the blog that focuses on how cool it is to live in these wild Adirondack Mountains. I think the story is the fact that armed robberies are few and far between here. Well, really the story is the description of the robber in today’s Press Republican, "It looks like (the robber) had on a Carhartt jacket with a hood on it over a toque." My regular readers already know what a toque is. The robbery happened in Tupper Lake, New York, a region of the Adirondacks just west of Lake Placid known for its lumberjack and French Canadian cultural influence. Both Carhartt jackets and toques say it all when it comes to logging, or being a lumberjack. As a matter of fact, I had one of the most memorable breakfasts of my life in Tupper Lake at a restaurant called The Lumberjack Restaurant. Not only were there piles of breakfast meat, but an interesting collection of saws of all types hanging on the walls. It was the first time I had ever eaten with a crosscut saw hovering next to my ear if I sat up straight at the table. Tupper Lake hosts “Woodsman’s Days” every summer where you can compete in the Axe Throw or Tree Felling. The local High School football team is called the Lumberjacks. I am going to go out on a limb here: I bet the robber is a local.
