Idem Race Season in the Adirondacks

While sailboat racing is a ubiquitous summer sport, the Adirondack Mountains boast a unique sailing situation. The Adirondack's St. Regis Chain of Lakes is home to the only twelve Idem wooden sailboats in existence. They were designed by naval architect, Clinton Crane in the early 1900s specifically for races on the St. Regis Lake in the northern Adirondacks. The fleet, still sailing each summer on these waters, is the oldest, still-racing class of original one design sailboats in America. These races were and still are, an important part of the Great Camp culture of the Adirondacks. The season and race results were followed keenly as you can see from this New York Times article originally published in 1903, and this idem race result from 1904. Even way back in the day, city-dwellers fled to the Adirondacks to spend time outside, getting a dose of the now world-famous rejuvenation phenomena.
