Arts in the Adirondacks

To be clear, although I love to write about it, life in the Adirondacks encompasses much more than sports and playing outdoors. Adirondack living is inherently creative and inspirational. For example, Georgia O'Keefe found her muse at Lake George in the Adirondacks. Winslow Homer also found inspiration in summer trips to the Adirondacks Mountains. The Adirondacks are, and have traditionally been home to artists and creative people for generations. Writers love it here too. Many books by Russell Banks are set in the Adirondacks. Today I will refrain from trying to define why the Adirondacks are rejuvenating and spur creativity. Whether magic or negative ions, it just is so. Fortunately, performance artists feel good here too and we are frequently treated to world-class dance and music performances. For example, this Thursday evening the Rebecca Kelley Ballet Company will present a ballet performance where they are in Artists in Residence, at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA). Later in August, Ailey II, part of the New York City based Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, will perform. These two exceptional dance companies are just a sample of the performing artists who make their way to the Adirondacks. Check out the schedule at LPCA and you'll find an amazing array of music, film, theater, dance and art!
