Delightful Skiing of Every Kind in the Adirondacks

Yesterday's ski experience was a perfect example of how the adage, different slopes for different folks, applies even in the world of having fun on skis. During a rest stop at Whiteface mid-station yesterday, I ran into some friends who participate in the Masters race program through the New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF). I raved about the incredibly fun, soft mogul skiing on Skyward and asked if they had tried it out. The incredulous looks and replies I received were indicative of the racer mentality, "why get slowed down in ungroomed, soft snow when there are fast, packed powder, race-groomed runs?" They were raving about how much fun they were having on the groomers. I agreed because earlier in the day I had a most excellent run on Mountain Run. Fast and fun, it was definitely a groomers delight. But, the soft moguls were a blast for me too. I also had a lift-ride conversation with a nice 16-year old from Waterville Valley, New Hampshire who was in town for a United States Ski Association freestyle competition. He was clear: there was nowhere else he'd rather be then skiing that ridiculously difficult bumps course on Wilderness. And then, while out classical cross-country skiing on exquisitely groomed Mount Van Hoevenberg's trails later in the day, a friend buzzed by ski-skating, enjoying the perfect skate conditions. I guess the moral of the story is to each his own, whatever floats your boat, or skis, or board, we've got it all in the Adirondacks - America's playground.
