Adirondack Dilemma: So Much Fun, So Little Time

As someone who loves living in the Adirondacks, I can attest there are more fun things to do here then there are hours in the day. I don't think the phrase, "I'm bored" is heard very often around Lake Placid. For example, the world famous Lake Placid Horse Show opens today at the Horse Show Grounds, at the entrance to the Village of Lake Placid. Horse Show time in Lake Placid is beautiful and fun, but busy. It is quite a scene: the roads in and around the Village are packed with cyclists, runners, cross-country roller skiers, dual-wheeled horse show trucks and 18-wheeled trailers full of large animals.
Speaking of sinewy-fit athletic animals, the 12th annual Ironman Lake Placid takes off bright and early the morning of July 25th. The race starts with a brisk 2.4 mile swim in Mirror Lake in the Village of Lake Placid, and ends with a marathon finish at the Lake Placid speed skating oval. Of course, the best part of the event is the 112-mile road bike ride which happens between the swim and the run. The bike course takes the athletes up and down and through the breathtaking Adirondack Mountains. It seems like every summer day is Ironman day due the large number of training camps and their patrons who like to train in Lake Placid. The first High Peaks Cyclery Monday Mini-triathlon was held last night in Lake Placid; the series continues every Monday evening throughout the summer at Mirror Lake.
The Adirondack Dilemma is no less challenging for a non-competitive person. Even if you have no interest in competitive athletics, it is easy to become overwhelmed with all the interesting things to do and see in the area. There are opportunities to enjoy live music, dance and theater every day, somewhere in the region. In Lake Placid, we enjoy free outdoor concerts every Tuesday evening courtesy of Songs at Mirror Lake, a locally sponsored and supported series of performances featuring different musical genres each week. The Lake Placid Sinfonietta opens their summer season this Wednesday, July 7th with their first concert in the park. The Lake Placid Center for the Arts boasts a busy summer calendar with the Rebecca Kelly dance troupe in residence during July and broadcasts of opera from the Met aired all summer.
A natural and reasonable response when overwhelmed with things to 'do,' is to do nothing at all. Coincidentally, the Adirondacks are the perfect spot to indulge this pastime as well. There might be nothing more relaxing than nodding off in a gently swaying hammock in the cool shade of an Adirondack balsam.
It doesn't seem to matter how much time one spends in the Adirondacks, there always seems to be one more thing to do, see, or experience. If you are thinking about visiting the Adirondack paradise, it is a wise idea to pace yourself and not struggle too hard with the dilemma; the Adirondacks are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Ah! Wish I were there! Great photos. I've logged many hours through all seasons on the Peninsula Trail.
