Adirondack Guest House Phenomenon

If you live in the Adirondacks, you are familiar with the Adirondack guest house phenomenon. Friends of your child show up and need a place to stay while they hike all 46 Adirondack peaks, for example. Or a long lost cousin calls and says, "I'm in Lake Clear, don't you guys live near there?" Most of us are genuinely happy to have friends and family visit. We quickly acclimate to operating an Adirondack guest house; the "Adirondack" part gives you a lot of leeway when it comes to formal entertaining. The challenging visitors are those unexpected guests you really like. You want to spend time visiting with them, but because they are unexpected, you might have already made other commitments. And I am sure many readers can relate to how difficult it is to get somewhere on time just as these guests pop in to say "Hi." It was today's blog star who caused my punctuality problems yesterday. This insouciant and surprise house guest stopped by just as I was ready to walk out the door for an appointment. I could not resist taking a moment to enjoy her visit while she enjoyed her snack. After all, the best pleasures in life are the unexpected.
