Happy Birthday Peace Symbol!

The Peace Symbol is half a century old today. "This forked symbol was designed for the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC) and was adopted as its badge by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in Britain, and originally was used by the British nuclear disarmament movement. It was later generalized to become an international icon for the 1960s anti-war movement, and was also adopted by the counterculture of the time. It was designed and completed February 21, 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a professional designer and artist in Britain for the April 4 march planned by DAC from Trafalgar Square, London to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in England." (Wikepedia)
It is a little know fact that the peace symbol is actually a combination of the semaphoric signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for Nuclear Disarmament. Both the peace symbol and the peace sign were big with some people in my generation like me. Today's image is the rasta peace symbol. A combination of two very pleasant messages. The Rastafarian's have long been known for their struggle for peace and justice.
As a way to integrate this tidbit of information into the Adirondack theme: it is rather peaceful in the Adirondacks these days. The local public schools are on vacation and this is the "shoulder season" in the tourism business. Which of course means peaceful skiing!
