A Doubly Dark Day - Even in the Adirondacks!

I clicked on my calendar reminder with a feeling of dread this morning. I knew the message was going to remind me this weekend marks the end of daylight savings time and the beginning of outdoor exercising mit headlamp time. In my book, November is the most challenging month of the year in the Adirondacks. One can't quite count on skiing yet, and the trails are pretty wet and slushy for running and hiking. For example, today's lovely outdoor clime of 33 degrees with slush falling from the ski, oops, sky, is standard fare for the Adirondacks in November. I don't even get to whine about it because the resident biologist can say with scientific certainty, "It is always like this in November."
In addition to just feeling like we are losing sunlight when we manipulate time via the clock, we really are losing daylight as the revolution of the earth creates shorter days. Tonight is also the dark of the moon. In other words, it would be dark out even if the Adirondacks weren't completely blanketed in a thick, dismal layer of endless gray clouds. Did I mention November is my least favorite month?
That was a good whine, but to be fair, the end of November in the Adirondacks can be very sweet. When the temperatures cooperate and snow falls, the skiing is wonderful. This is especially true because the ski trails are nearly empty; no one else is thinking 'skiing' except those of us who live here.
Despite the gray and slush, empty trails of trackless snow are delightful and well worth the sacrifice of early November in the Adirondacks.
Don't forget, Whiteface is scheduled to open 3 weeks from today on November 26. The good crew at the mountain are already blowing snow!!
